Movemnt 3 from Silver Lining

Frank Ticheli’s concerto for flute and wind ensemble, Silver Lining, was commissioned by a consortium of schools across the US, including the University of South Carolina in 2017 and premiered by Jim Walker at the National Flute Association Convention in Minneapolis in August, 2017. The third movement, posted here, is a rapid-fire conversation between flutist and ensemble, exploring the entire range of the instrument. This is a live performance of the University of South Carolina Symphonic Winds at the College Band Directors National Association meeting in Tampa in February, 2018.

Carl Nielson

Carl Nielsen was born on this day in 1865. Originally a violinist, Nielsen studied violin and composition at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he later became a professor and ultimately the academy director. He worked there until his death in 1931. The Concerto for Flute and Orchestra was written in 1926 for Holger Gilbert-Jespersen, the flutist for the Copenhagen Wind Quintet.

Joan Tower

Joan Tower, born on this day in 1938, is widely regarded as one of the most important American composers living today. During a career spanning more than fifty years, she has made lasting contributions to musical life in the United States as composer, performer, conductor, and educator. Kenneth Cox graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Music degree in 2014 and currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts at Bowling Green State University.
